Starbase 109: The Phoenix

"We have powerful tools: Openness, optimism and the spirit of curiosity." -Jean-Luc Picard

Welcome to Starbase 109! We are a "Star Trek" play-by-Nova RPG sim with a legacy covering over a decade! Starbase 109 is part of Theta Fleet's “Area 51” task force.

Our sim takes place within the decade prior to the events in the first season of “Star Trek: Picard.” SB109 lies out on the edge of Federation space, isolated far from the more “lawful” parts of the Alpha Quadrant. As a Federation starbase, we must uphold Federation law. But that can be tricky when you're located in a place rife with social instability. Sometimes we must take matters into our own hands, even if that means bending the rules... something the station's inhabitants know all-too-well!

We're looking for bright minds to come aboard and create fantastic stories within the “Star Trek” universe! We are a sim that honors Gene Roddenberry's original vision of hope, aspiration, and progression of the human spirit!

Our sim is rated PG-13 and is open to ages 18 and higher. We do not condone writing of torture or excessive violence, harsh profanity, or graphic sexuality. We encourage compelling plots with a diverse cast of characters, containing the action and drama befitting the “Trek” universe on a Starbase with endless amounts of possibilities!

Above all, inclusion and activity between our crew is our first priority. Primary characters must take on roles vital to a Federation starbase. Every player is urged to interact with others. There are primary missions going on at all times, and characters will be required to perform their designated jobs. Stories with NPC characters are always welcome too! Feel free to write and create as much as you like! If you are new to online simming, we welcome you with open arms! We hope we can make your first steps into our community easy and enjoyable!

Before we accept your application, the Commanding Officer will contact you to start a "Sample Joint Post." This is meant to determine the quality of writing, your interaction with others, and how well you are able to write your character. It is not an official post.

Legacy Award
In the memory of Susan Nixon. She was a mother figure to all who came aboard. She cared about every player and every character, and was our CO for almost the entirety of Starbase 109's twelve years. Her departure greatly saddens us all. Starbase 109, her legacy to us, will continue with her in all our hearts. Her contributions to the simming community and her ability to mentor writers on her sims has been invaluable and greatly appreciated.

Posted on Fri 6th Sep, 2024 @ 5:40pm by Captain Gordon Francis in Sim Announcement

Hello crew!

This has been a long time coming, and at this point I don't think should come as a surprise. So I'll be brief.

There are several players/characters that have not logged on for months, some even over a year. We've all had a lot of emotional moments in the last year or so, and I can understand if people have needed time. However, I believe it is time to move on, and to move on means I need to know who are still interested and who are leaving.

I'm giving everyone until Friday, September 13th to respond via private message, or on the OOC Thread. If you have not responded by then, we will deactivate your character(s). To preserve the sim in its entirety, NO CHARACTERS ARE BEING DELETED. All posts will still be here, but your position(s) will be listed as open for new recruits.

I sincerely hope everyone comes back. It has been a great honor writing with all of you, and I'm looking forward to moving ahead into the next exciting phase of Starbase 109!

Best,

CF/Captain Gordon Francis
Commanding Officer, Starbase 109

» New Mission, "The Phoenix Gamble!"

Posted on Mon 17th Jun, 2024 @ 3:19pm by Captain Gordon Francis in Sim Announcement

Here we are, as promised, the start of a NEW MISSION, "The Phoenix Gamble!!!!"

After the rescue of a mysterious ship, Starbase 109 is attacked and crippled. Now everyone on the Starbase must make a difficult and personal choice that could lead them to redemption, or total annihilation. Can the people of Starbase 109 unite against devastating odds? Or is this finally the end?

This will lead into a "soft relaunch" for the sim, in which all plots are resolved, unused characters deactivated, and unused or unnecessary positions removed. So now is the time to tie up your loose ends and get ready for a whole new chapter in Starbase 109!

Our previous mission, "O' the Cardiff Rose," will remain "Current" through July. All mission posts are to be resolved by August 1.

Our new mission is dedicated to Susan.

I've been asked repeatedly about what we all will do to honor Susan within the sim. After much consideration, I've decided anyone can do anything. This is a sensitive, personal topic, so there will be no regulations. This sim respects the fact that everyone grieves in different ways. As individuals, please respect that as well. Susan deserves nothing less. She will also be commemorated permanently on our home page. I want to have that up soon, so if you have a request or idea, now is the time to share it by sending me a PM.

Susan was a devout Christian, and she saw in "Star Trek's" message of love and tolerance a similarity to the words and actions of Jesus. As a Christian myself, I see it too. So I'm committed to keeping the Gene Roddenberry "Star Trek" spirit alive and well here (don't worry, I know the difference). We've had a rough time getting back on our feet, but I think we're finally ready to take on a new era. SB109 is an institution. It's lasted over a decade, and that is no small thing. Let's keep this institution going. For Susan, for our characters, and for each other. A sim isn't just a game. It's a community. I love our community. It doesn't end with Susan. This sim will live long and always prosper!

Lastly, and for the record, Susan will be listed in Personnel as "ELOA." Not forgotten, nor gone.

Best,

CF/Captain Gordon Francis
Commanding Officer, Starbase 109

Newer members of the sim might be unaware that descendants of the Addams family serve in Starfleet and/or live on the station.

Here is some member of the family playing music by Hildegard von Bingen--I kid you not!

Hi Everyone! Your friendly-neighborhood Acting Captain here with the Monthly Report:

Awards:

Austen has won Theta Fleet Player of the Month! His return after a serious injury and surgery has been an inspiration to us all and it is an award well-deserved.

I also nominated Ruth in my report for Writer of the Month. In a dark time for our sim, her writing has remained consistently great and she is a lot of fun to write with!

Post of the Month Nominee went to "Security: Are Any of Us Truly Secure?," a post by Mike and me about the first meeting between Captain Gordon Francis and the station's hardened Chief of Security, Lieutenant-Commander Dallas Briggs. It took months to perfect, and I really like the outcome. Thanks Mike!

Other news:

SB109 has had a difficult year. There have been departures, injuries, extended leaves, and drastic changes in command everywhere. I want to thank everyone who has stuck around, and you all have my promise that next year will be much better.

So let's start writing! We still have great characters on this sim, and several amazing new stories that are just beginning! The base is facing the difficulties of new leadership, a pirate infestation, an overhaul of Brown Sector, and a brewing temporal/dimensional crisis to name just a few. I want to start telling stories again. Let's end this year on a high note!

I want to wish everyone Happy Holidays! Chanukah has started and Christmas is just a few short weeks away, with the New Year shortly after! I hope everyone stays safe and has lots of fun with families and friends.

My best to you all!

» School versus Sim: School Won

Posted on Thu 23rd Nov, 2023 @ 1:10am by Commander Paul Graves PsyD in General News

Hello, all--I have formally announced to the Command Team that I need to go on an extended leave of absence because of school. I'm pursuing a BS in Healthcare Administration through night school, but I can't do that and write in this sim, too. I tried to tell myself I could, and then a month passed, and I'm still not back to writing.

I will be on vacation from work December 23-January 1, so I intend to do some writing then. During Thanksgiving week, I plan to write some kind of post to take Paul out of the picture for a while--maybe a counseling conference or a brief guest teaching position. I know I have JPs that Ruth and Susan are waiting on me to finish, so I hope to work on them this week if Susan and Ruth are available.

I do plan to return to 109, but only when I can take a few days away from work, so I'll have time to write. I'm not certain of my graduation date right now. It all depends on how long I take to finish my coursework. I intend to finish it more quickly than my program mentor has scheduled for it. I'll keep you all posted.

Much love to you all. To those of you living in the US, Happy Thanksgiving! I'm grateful for having had the joy of writing with all of you, and I look forward to writing with you again, once I have a B.S. after my name. :)

Chantal
