"The fighters have no chance of success," Zhara replied. "Not against that. Not unless you use subterfuge or hit and run tactics. We'll need more than one starship to have any chance at all. Have you considered employing the starbase's defenses?"

"That's not a bad idea, Lieutenant," Marcus said. He turned to Geri. "You're still in command of this exercise, commander. What think you?"

Zhara stood. "While the two of you decide what you're going to do, I'm going to the Renown." With that, she stood, bowed to the Colonel and Lieutenant Commander and left.

"Colonel I have already considered and implemented those suggestions. I am quite aware of the tactical capabilities of both this star base and the fighters. This is why I need the Renown out there." Geri replied gruffly.

Marcus scowled, but nodded. "Very well. But if this goes pear-shaped, the record will show that you called the shots. If you need me, I'll be on the Renown." He turned on his heel, and left without another word. He After this was over, he would have a very long talk with his XO about due respect.

"You do that..." Geri said softly returning her gaze to the main viewer. "Mister Bauer what is the state of the fleet?"

"Five minutes Commander, but you should reconsider....."

"Mister Bauer I will not fire upon federation forces without due cause. Prepare the star base defences."

Outside, Zhara wasn't far enough away not to pick up on the emotional overtones in the command center. It made her wonder if Severide would get through this assignment intact or if she would buckle under the pressure. Time would tell.

The transporter room was nearby and she quickly beamed over to the Renown.

Marcus joined her shortly afterwards, materializing in the transporter room of the Renown. "Something tells me that Severide has authority issues," he commented to Zhara as he stepped off the pad. "I think she could handle a normal drill, but everything about this one seems off. I want to be underway as soon as possible, and take the ship around to the far side of the planet, just in case somebody needs rescuing."

"Severide has a lot of issues," Rynn commented. "Read her psychological profile. Her last posting had some interesting things to say about her." She shook her head. "She was busted down to janitor for a short time."

She opened a comm to Lieutenant Mabrade. "Rynn to Mabrade. We're going to launch and act as a secondary unit if necessary. Care to join us?"

"It would be our pleasure to escort a lady; and protect the star ship as well." Mabrade used that caviler grin. "Okay Boys and Girls get ready to play a viedeo Game of war."

"Ma'am, they are within firing range." Bauer reported.

"Raise shields." Geri said calmly.

Bauer shock his head slightly and raised the shields. If these ships were about to use actual weapons the false shields would do nothing.

Moments later the station shook as it was rocked with weapons fire.

Bauer began receiving reports from the initial contact. "Direct hit! This is no drill ma'am they are firing! Hull breaches on decks 15, 37, 92, 130, 432 and 500 through 540."

"And so we have our answer." Geri said softly tapping her arm console. "Severide to Svechinskaya, would you please raise the shields."

Bauer looked at Geri confusedly. She had just asked him to do so had she lost her mind?

"Shields up." Came the reply from the comms. Moments later more shots were fired upon the station, this time the station was not shook.

"Report Mister Bauer." Geri stated smugly.

"Shields are holding ma'am." he replied looking cluelessly at his console. "What the hell is going on?" he exclaimed.

"Playing possum Mister Bauer. They would not dare attack an operational station, especially if they had known we were onto them. Now they have no choice." She tapped her arm console once again. "Weapons now please."

"Ma'am, I will need a few minutes for weapons. That last hit caused surge in primary weapons systems. I must bypass to make operational." Tatyana replied.

"You have one." Geri replied.

"Commander. We've got intruders. Seven boarding parties made it onto the station." Bauer reported.

Geri scoffed. "Severide to Captain Langille. Deploy teams to intercept the intruders."

"Severide to Renown and Mabrade. Engage the fleet, you will have supporting fire in a few moments. Hold the line until then. Severide out."

Power fluctuated momentarily in the operations room, then telltales lit up like Christmas trees, indicating failure of defensive grids and security systems. At each point of failure, sensors showed unauthorized personnel.

Geri looked to her console noting the shields had fallen and the weapons were still offline. "Typical." she said rolling her eyes. "Engineering I need those shields and weapons up ASAP."

Aboard the Renown, safe from the enemy's scanners, with an entire planet between them, Marcus listened. "The station's been boarded. How much you want to bet they've taken control of the fighter bays, too?"
