Finally Understanding

Nyx walked into her apartment followed closely by Kell. She expected a loud chastising and argument and was surprised when Kell walked into the kitchen and came back with two drinks.

"Here, hot cinnamon tea with cream and sugar." He said and then sat down on the sofa with his Raktajino. He looked at Nyx and pondered her for a moment making her nervous.

Trying to avoid his gaze, Nyx stared at the cup in her hand. Feeling like an errant child, she waited to hear what Devyn had to say to her. When he sat there without a word, she suddenly felt the need to fidget in her seat.

"Aren't you going to say anything?" She asked him expecting an explosion.

"How's your tea?" He asked as he blew the steam from his cup. He was determined to make her as uncomfortable as possible and it was working.

"My tea is fine. It's just the right temperature with just the right amount of cream and sugar. Why aren't you yelling at me?" She asked.

"For what?" He asked almost sarcastically.

"I put myself and our baby at risk to satisfy my own grudge against that ass, Karikkar. I had no business running an obstacle course or training with a group of Marines." Nyx berated herself. "I have no idea what I was thinking. I just wanted to feel better about myself. It was selfish." She looked at Devyn. "I know you must be furious with me."

Setting down his drink, Kell looked at Nyx and gave a small smile. "I think you covered it all." He took her hand. "The truth is ,this is partly my fault." He looked at her. "And as much as I'd like nothing more than to turn you over my knee, I know I'm as much to blame. I upset you and I'm sorry."

"So are you saying you won't be Cara's friend anymore?" Nyx looked at him.

"Be careful Adanyxia, I haven't ruled out putting you over my knee yet." He glared at her. "How am I going to get you over Cara?" He shook his head.

"Send her back to Earth?" Nyx looked at him.

"Stop it." He warned her. It was then that he remembered the flowers he'd picked up. It was a beautiful bouquet of elegant flowers hand chosen to convey a specific message. He got up and headed toward their bedroom, returning momentarily with the flowers.

Handing her the arrangement, he sat down next to her and took her hand again. "Nyx, marry me. Let me prove to you that you're the one I want to be with. Let me show you how much I love you...and our baby." He slipped down to one knee in front of her. "Marry me Adanyxia and be my wife."

"What?" She couldn't help but smile. "You don't have to propose so I'll forgive you." She shook her head.

"Do you remember before we got here the shop on Betazed that we went into? You found a lavender diamond ring, very rare and I told you it was frivolous?"

Nyx wrinkled her brow. "I remember. We argued about it for two days."

Kell grinned. "There was a reason I didn't want you to buy it." He turned the flower vase around and pointed to the small latinum tag. Pulling it from the stick it was attached to, he unhooked the ring attached to it. "I'm yours Nyx, forever. Now I want you to be mine, forever." He slid the ring on her finger. The very ring she'd admired on Betazed. "I was waiting for things to be just right but I can't stand the thought of you thinking that I might want someone else even for a second."

Nyx was speechless. She looked at the ring on her finger and read the inscription on the small tag that accompanied it. Wiping a tear from her eye, she nodded her head before barely managing to get the word out, 'yes.' She put her arms around Devyn and hugged him.

"Nyx?" He looked at her again. "IF you ever put our baby in danger again, I won't think twice about paddling your ass." Smiling, he leaned back to see her face and knew she understood he meant it. He pulled her in and kissed her.
