Xavier dragged himself out of bed. It was something-to-four-in-the-morning and a call at this time meant one of two things. Either an emergency or someone who had no concept of normal social hours or who didn't have a proper job where social hours meant anything at all. Xavier was willing to bet on the latter.

He threw himself into his desk chair and activated the terminal on his desk. It took a few seconds for the computer to spring to life and connect from this lonely sector to where ever this transmission was originating from. As soon as his face appeared on the screen Xavier awarded himself some brownie point for knowing exactly whom this call was from. It was a rather hollow victory mind, he had still had to leave his warm bed and Godlike dreams.

"Do you have any idea what time it is?" Xavier asked as he rubbed his very tired eyes.

"Time is so relative," the familiar voice replied. "You're the Starfleet nerd, shouldn't you know all this?"

"It's half three in the morning and you want to talk about time and quantum mechanics?" Xavier yawned, even whilst awake this particular subject bored him to tears.

"Actually, I just wanted to see how my little bro was doing?"

"Your 'little bro' is shattered," Xavier quipped back, "though it is good to see you," he added, a little less defensively. "So what do I owe the pleasure? Or more importantly, what do you want?"

"Charming," Spencer said with a grin. "I actually just wanted to congratulate you on your new assignment. Barely out of Academy nappies and already Assistant Chief of Ops on a fancy station."

Xavier couldn't help but laugh. "If you think the Protector is fancy then you are clearly mistaken. I really have my work cut out for me, we all do. I'm surprised the old thing is still in orbit."

"Stop whining, you chose the assignment." Spencer said. As always, straight to the point.

"I probably wouldn't have if I knew how bad it was and how much of a bitch my boss is. There are some perks though," Xavier added with a grin.

Spencer rolled his eyes as he swept his curly dark hair out of his eyes. "Who is he Xav?"

"Who's who?" Xavier asked innocently.

"Don't insult me Xav," Spencer grinned as he rolled his eyes. "There's only one 'perk' you ever really care about, so who is he?"

Xavier grinned, Spencer knew him so well. "A guy I used to go to the Academy with."

"Josh?" Spencer asked hopefully.

"NO!" Xavier answered with more aggression than was probably needed. "Stop trying to cause trouble. He's called Giellun and I like him a lot," Xavier continued once he was sure his brother had got the message. "Probably more than I liked Josh," he added, not really knowing if it was true or not.

"Sounds like I should pay a visit to the middle of nowhere just to check this guy out," Spencer said with a crooked smile.

"Maybe you should," Xavier said agreeing and surprising Spencer all in one. "He's defo a good reason to visit and a good reason for me to want to stay here a while."

"Unlike your bitch of a boss?" Spencer asked with a raised eyebrow.

Xavier didn't even know that Spence had picked up on that, the conversation had veered off slightly. "That's right," he agreed. "I don't know what to do about her, she's been AWOL for days now."

Spencer sighed. "You know exactly what to do Xav, speak to someone and stop being a big girl."

Xavier could always count on Spencer to tell him how it was and not listen to any of his bullshit. It was for this reason that Spence was Xavier's favourite brother, the two of them could chat for hours at a time, dragging each other up and then tearing each other down, the way brothers were meant to.

"Anyways, enough about me. What trouble you been causing?"

Spencer played at looking offended. "Me? Trouble? Never."

Xavier smiled. He knew his brother well enough to not push the subject too much. "You still writing holo-programmes?"

"Not officially," Spencer said mysteriously.

"Good enough. I need a favour....."
