Mission: A Phaser as Deadly as a Candlestick
Location: USS Samurai, The Triangle
Timeline: Three Days Ago

June was the only one of the sisters on the bridge when the distress call came in. “Officer of the Deck,” she said, touching a control to temporarily silence the message being sent to her audio prosthesis, “We’re receiving a distress call from warp vessel Beowulf.”

“On audio,” the Lieutenant answered.

June obeyed, her bunny-ear shaped audio prosthesis bobbing as she turned to her station. “This is Free Trader Beowulf, calling anyone... Mayday, Mayday… We are under attack... Main drive is gone… Turret number one not responding... Mayday...Losing cabin pressure fast calling anyone... Please help...This is Free Trader Beowulf... “

The Lieutenant nodded to June. “Open a channel, Lieutenant,” he directed, and when she nodded in response, he called out across the stars, “Free Trader Beowulf, this is the United Starship Samurai. Help is on the way. Hang in there, Beowulf!”
He paused for a moment, but there was no response. He pressed a control on the arm of the Captain’s chair, said, “Skipper? Officer of the deck.”

“Suzuki,” a sleepy voice said from the com system.

“We’ve received a distress call from a vessel under attack.”

“Very well,” the Captain said, then, “Drop a log buoy and lay in an intercept course. When we’re within half an hour, sound general quarters.”

“Aye-aye, ma’am.” He closed the channel. "Lieutenant Winter, charge and deploy a log buoy. Mr. Queeg, lay in an intercept course, warp eight."

Obeying, June Winter shook her head. They’d spent five years out beyond the bounds of the Federation, in Trans-Romulan space.
They were on their way home and had reached the Triangle, the no-sentient’s region bounded by the Klingon Empire, the former Romulan Star Empire, and the Federation. They could figuratively see their mailbox back home from here. She waved her fingers, saying so long to the notional mailbox... Samurai would be a little delayed.
