Dancing on my own

Posted on Sun 16th Jul, 2017 @ 11:45am by Lieutenant Commander Solan Jekkar

654 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Unity Week
Location: Commander Jekkars Quarters

Solan slumped down onto the couch in his Quarters and undid his Uniform jacket. The tall and somewhat imposing Andorian had been pulling double shifts over the last few days to make sure Unity Week went off without a hitch. The Security Chief knew the logistical nightmare a Space Station posed but as always he embraced the challenge.

"Computer how about some music?" He asked the automated system as he remained slumped down on his couch.

=/\= Please specify what genre of music you require. =/\=

The Andorian paused for a moment as he looked over to the far corner of his quarters. A smile then spread across his face. "Audio file Jekkar Sigma 2 Sigma." He then got up from the couch as the music played and made a short stroll towards his prized possession. His Cello.

Since he'd arrived on Vanguard it had seemed like and eternity since he had played. The instrument itself was a handcrafted replica of a 20th Century Austrian Model, he'd purchased in Vienna when he was a Cadet at the Academy. In some ways the Cello was part of Jekkar, it went with him from posting to posting and it was his means of escape from the day to day activity of a Starfleet Officer.

He picked up the bow and sat down beside his desk. Being left handed it was hard to get a left handed version of the instrument but luckily with it being crafted exclusively for him it wasn't a problem. He took the neck of the Cello in his right hand as he got comfortable and waited for a moment or two before going along with the music in the background. Not many knew this side of Jekkar, he was the athlete at the Academy as well as the talented Criminologist, but very few knew of his suitable skillset with this kind of instrument.

Some people use the Holodeck to unwind, others take a walk in the Garden district of Vanguard but for Solan this was his solace and tranquillity. His blue hands were in time with the audio file as he matched notes and suddenly his focus changed from the Security of the Station to keeping in time with the music that was supporting his instrumental tastes.

As the music played it became clear that in some ways on a Station as large as Vanguard, Solan Jekkar the renowned Criminologist and Starfleet Officer was....Alone.

He had spent the vast majority of his life focusing on his career and honing his skills that his true friends had been so few and far between. His Academy Class had all graduated and moved on to bigger things, his family were settled and living their lives and yet for Solan he remained focused on his ambitions. He realised as played the Cello that whilst he enjoyed it and it relaxed him, it also made him sad.

As the music stopped it left Solan sat in silence holding the bow, looking around at the living space that was his. A room full of memories and highlights that yet still managed to feel so empty. He placed the bow down into the slot on the Cello rack alongside the bulky instrument and with his sleeve he wiped his eyes. He would blame it on his fatigue and shrug it off as a lack of sleep and copious amounts of caffeine and say it was catching up to him.

Jekkar kicked off his boots and hung his jacket on its hanger as he sat on the bed he hadn't slept in in days. His gaze towards the ceiling in his bedroom.

But could that truly be the case? Was it a case of fatigue and weariness or was it the fact he knew his fate?

All he knew was that for the moment as he wiped another small tear from the corner of his eye. He was dancing on his own.

I really liked this look behind the mask of the Andorian - making him more human, so to speak. It's good to know that Andorians and humans share certain emotional states.
