Marcus walked to the infirmary. He needed to report there anyway, per regulations. Walking inside, he looked into the CMO's office. He found her there. staring at her viewscreen.
"I hope I'm not interrupting, Doc," he said pleasantly.
"Come in Colonel." Nyx looked up and then stood to greet the man. New command meant a new owner of her leash and she wasn't sure how to approach the man with the information. She was sure he'd read her file before coming to meet her and wondered if Karrikar had already given his version of 'training' sessions. "Are you here for your boarding physical?" She offered her hand to the man and hoped it didn't appear as shaky as she felt.
Marcus took the proffered hand and shook it firmly. "I am, indeed. I must say, I'm pleased to meet you. So where do you want me?"
"Let's put you in Triage bed 2." She'd isolated the Emergency and ward section of Sick Bay under quarantine until she was sure the base was free of the flu. "This should only take a few moments." She made nervous conversation as she picked up her scanner and lead the man to the empty room where she could examine him. "I enjoyed your speech last night." She wasn't being pretentious. She had enjoyed the speech and if the man stood to his words, she thought that she would like the man as well.
"Thank you, Lieutenant Nyx. I'm not usually one for speeches, but it just felt like the right thing to say. I saw on your record that you're a Chameloid, but that you have certain... issues which require more oversight than normal. I just want you to know, I'm not here to judge you. If you feel like talking about it, I'm free to listen and understand. I'm sure that you understand the concept of doctor-patient confidentiality. I like to think that as a commanding officer, I practice the same kind of discretion as long as it does not affect the safety of those things and people for which I am personally responsible." He looked at her. He didn't need to be a telepath to see that she was worried about something. "As a Marine, I realize that trust and respect are earned. The offer's there, for when I have earned yours."
"As a contingency to my remaining an officer in Star Fleet, I am required to answer any questions you might have after you read my file." She turned the trichorder on. She was a little shaky but she knew whatever this Commanding Officer decided, Devyn wouldn't allow any harm to come to her or their daughter. She finally believed and trusted this. She figured that Tallus might even protect her but of that she wasn't sure. "Yes, there are special protocols in place." She nodded. "My leash is yours to control. Colonel Drake chose to give it to Lt Colonel Tallus for whatever reason. He has been a firm but merciful tutor." She wouldn't call him kind but he was far from cruel. He was arrogant and a little more than obnoxious. He treated her kindly but the two still butted heads more than not. "Although, if I may. He's a pompous, self righteous ass who fits the stereotype of Pretentious Vulcan quite well." She left out her feelings about his being a Marine on purpose. She started her scan of the man. "Please just Nyx. With most, I prefer to leave rank out of the picture. In here I'm the boss no matter the rank." She smiled.
Marcus nodded sagely. "I can understand that, lieut... Nyx." He gave her a scapegrace little smile. "Sorry. It'll take a little getting used to not using rank, and I may resort to calling you 'Doc' on occasion until I know everyone by heart." As she continued to examine him, he looked at her. So tell me more about this complication you have and why you need the collar."
"I was orphaned at a very young age. Chameloids learn control during early adolescence and until then we don't have the ability to shift." Nyx explained as she punched results into her tricorder and then her computer. "My adopted parents were unaware of what exactly I was so I was never trained to control my alter ego." She grinned. "you're quite fit." Tapping more information, she continued her story. "Much like the Werewolves of old Earth legend, I cannot control my beast form without the collar. I become violent, uncontrollable, and unstable. The 'collar' prevents my body from shifting accidentally. The leash, or remote that Karrikar holds at this point in time, turns the collar on and off." She shrugged. "In the hands of some, I am a weapon. To others, I'm a toy or a pet. There are some that pity me and others that would torture me." She thought about the several months in the lab where she was forced into her beast form and beaten in an effort to garner obedience. "I think I'd be dead right now if Devyn hadn't rescued me."
"Devyn?" he asked, prompting her to go on.
"Commander Kell was working special missions when he came across Captain Dobbs' lab and me. When he figured out what was going on, he and his team pulled me out and reported what was going on to Star Fleet Admiralty. After about six months of tests, rehabilitation, and treatment for PTSD, I was released for duty. Devyn and I built our friendship and over time we...well we were married six months ago and we have a healthy and beautiful three month old little girl..Dobbs was aboard not long ago and nearly destroyed that when he kidnapped me and attempted to cut her from my womb when I was still pregnant.
Marcus looked shocked. "I hope they threw the book at him! That is not the behavior of civilized beings. You know, as yet, I have no family or children. I imagine there is nothing more comforting than coming home to loved ones."
Marcus leaned forward, and looked her straight in the eye, trying to penetrate the shaded windows to her soul. "I will tell you this now: you are an intelligent being, a mother, a wife, and endowed with free will. You are not a weapon, a toy, or a pet, nor will you be treated as such. If I receive word that this is being done to you, there will be severe repercussions. When I get a hold of your leash, it will be put in a safe place and not touched. It is my hope that after we have worked together long enough, you will trust me enough to allow me to help you learn what you need to learn in order to be free of the collar and leash if that is at all possible. In the meantime, you will be free to do as you will within the confines of the discipline of the service. I trust that you will come to me as your commanding officer, and maybe someday as your friend, with any questions, concerns, or issues which might affect your safety, or the safety of this station or its personnel." He leaned back. "Do you have any questions for me, or anything that you feel could be done to improve working conditions, or the facilities for which you are responsible?"
"I suppose Lieutenant Colonel Tallus Karikkar will have something to say about giving up the remote to my collar." She mentioned before changing the conversation and completing her scan.. "Can you tell me where you fractured your leg? Looks like it was what eight years ago?" She asked.
He thought a moment, remembering. "Oh, yes. That happened to me a couple of years ago. A friend convinced me to try Skiing." he grinned sheepishly. I caught an edge on a downhill run and the binding didn't release."
"It's healed nicely but you can see the calcium buildup." She nodded. "Have you been skiing since?" She asked the man before sneaking in her answer to his question. "Karikkar figures if I can control my self and my reactive nature while in my true form, I'll be able to control the temper of the beast in that form. So he strives to test my patience." She shrugged. "Devyn thinks it's been helpful...but as I said the man is arrogant and pompous and I'm sure he's doing it for some personal reason he's yet to disclose to anyone."
Marcus smiled a little. "Well, doctor, I'll speak to them about it. In the mean time, I assume I pass physical muster?" He quirked an eyebrow with a glint of humor in his eye.
"Yes sir. You're in 'ship shape' as the saying goes." Nyx smiled. "Sixteen percent body fat, heart rate under 80bpm, blood pressure 108/62. You're labs are all good, no sign of cardiac disease or vasculitis." She tapped into her PADD. "We're done here unless you have anything for me sir." Something told her to trust this man although a small part of her was skeptical of everyone.
"I think that just about covers it," Marcus said cheerfully. "Remember, doctor, if you ever need to talk, my door is open." He waved to her, and left the infirmary.
