Location: Orchids & Jazz, Deck 400
Timeline: MD 3, 0100

After midnight, the club began to quiet down. A few people coming off the evening shift entered between 2400 and 0200, but they were on their way to quarters, just stopping for a little relaxation. The rowdies usually left between 2300 and 2400. Not that anyone was every really rowdy in Jade's club.

It was her habit to circulate downstairs, and then check the upstairs and close it off around 0100. Tonight, she didn't think anyone was left in the loft, but she started up the spiral stairs to check anyway.

At the top of the steps, she turned right and began to circle the area, blowing out tall black or silver candles on each table as she went by. She came to an abrupt halt toward the back of the loft. A man in casual jumpsuit sat with his head down on the table. He might have been drunk except for the pool of blood under his head, dripping off onto the floor.

Slowly, Jade approached the figure. If it was a joke, it was a cruel one, not to mention expensive to clean the carpeting. As she neared, she knew it was no joke. The distinctive coppery smell of blood and death pervaded the corner. Without going closer, she backed up and turned toward the comm unit she'd had installed on the second floor, just in case.

"Security Office," she said calmly. She hoped someone down there was a good detective. This was definitely not death from natural causes.

"This is security," came a response from the other end. "Go ahead."

"Jade Lantz here, Orchids & Jazz, Deck 400, Promenade. Wake up the Chief, please. I've just found a dead man in the loft."
