Jade finished her conference with the chef. After the research she'd done, he'd agreed to make cakes shaped like animals - elephants, targs, fire beasts of Sullus, and Kryonian tigers. She'd also prevailed upon him to figure out how to make funnel cakes, cotton candy and soft pretzels.
"I'll mess with the desserts, but I am absolutely not making anything called a hot dog, so forget it!" he insisted.
"Alright, just the desserts then," Jade agreed. "Thank you, Mr. Lockley. I know it's a great imposition, and such short notice, too. I appreciate your flexibility and willingness to make Orchids & Jazz the best restaurant in the Promenade."
"Yes, well, with my cooking, how could it not be?" he sniffed. "None of those replicator restaurants can hold a candle to the real thing."
"Exactly why I hired you," Lantz said, subtlely reminding him that he was an employee, and his artistic temperament could only push her so far. "We are agreed, then. I'll expect something for the dinner specials in a few hours. Thank you again."
Jade left the kitchen, thinking that she ought to have been a diplomat.

"Where should we try first?" Terrence asked, his slender form twisting this way and that on Deck 400.
"I'm hungry," his companion said, walking backward in front of him, so they were face to face.
"Watch out!" Terence exclaimed, grabbing him and keeping him from tripping over a small child. "Just face the direction you're going. We'll find something to eat first, then. How about that place?" he nodded his head toward a purple lighted sign that showed three white orchids on stems. "Orchids & Jazz. Sounds good, don't you think?"
"My stomach thinks my throat was cut. Anything sounds good!" Dante answered.
The two tall young men walked into the jazz club and looked around. "Sit on a bar stool?" Terence asked. His friend shrugged, so they headed that way and sat at one end. The bar was a beautiful high-gloss wood of some kind, and Terence ran his hand along its smoothness. "Feels nice," he said.
"Long as they have edible food, I don't care about anything," Dante said.
Jade walked down toward the two men who had just seated themselves at the foot of the bar. "Hello, gentlemen. What can I get for you today?"
Terence smiled his blinding smile at the owner of the club. He had that bad-boy charm going for him, with dark curly hair and a cleft chin. "My friend is starving. Perhaps you can suggest something that will save his life?"
Jade had seen his type before, so she smiled back at him, but wasn't taken in by his charm. "Right you are. Let's start with an appetizer - bacon and cheese potato skins, perhaps?"
Dante's eyes lit up. "That sounds perfect. As a starter, of course, I'll want lots more. Just keep it coming!"
"You are such a deren-zomb," Terence said. "Where are your manners?" He turned to Ms Lantz and said, "I apologize for my friend. He was orphaned at an early age and didn't have a mother to teach him to be polite."
Jade waved it off and said, "I like a man who likes my food. I'll be right back with those appetizers."
As they waited for their food to arrive, Terence kept up his banter with Dante. All the while, his eyes roamed the entire restaurant, taking in the clientele, the decor, the quality of materials used, even the jewelry Jade had been wearing. He had a job to do, no matter how lovely the woman was.
