[ON]

Jennings stared at the Ensign directly across from him with an un-wavering eye. The officer starred directly back at the marine Sergeant Major with his fingers interlaced in front of his mouth and noise. The contest went on for minuets until a quick blink from the Ensign was followed by a smirk from Sergeant Major Jennings. Without looking down at the board, he grabbed a miniature statue of a very well restored but slightly old looking knight and moved it across the board to a black checked spot.

The castling maneuver was good in protecting ones king from an aggressive attacker. Two moves into this chess game, it was fairly clear that Jennings was as aggressive as they come. The Ensign, familiar with the game to a degree, had been on the defensive the entire time, waiting for the perfect time to strike. That time never presented itself as Jennings was on his side of the board taking and attacking every spot, a tactic that forces him to focus on several fronts but not on the moves.

“Checkmate.” Jennings said standing from the table as the ensign leaned back in defeat. The flight was nearing it’s end and luckily for the three of them, they were starting to get stir crazy. Jennings for the most part was use to small spaces, it was however the company he was keeping that was making things rather difficult for him.

Walking over to the replicator, Jennings requested a cup of coffee, strong and dark as the pilot moved over to this co-pilot seat to relieved the other.

The Lieutenant (JG) then turned over the controls and turned around in her chair towards the Sergeant Major. Thought the marines were a well known group, many people and Starfleet personnel simply didn’t know what the marines where about or what their real purpose was in Starfleet, a group by definition which was a exploratory force, not a military one.

Jennings noticed the stare and spoke while waiting for the coffee to cool down some.

“I can hear you thinking Lieutenant, something on your mind Ma‘am?”

Leaning back in her chair, she spoke. “What’s the difference between what Starfleet marines do, and what Starfleet Security does, aside from a fighting force, I’ve always wondered that?”

Jennings moved back over to his seat and thought about the question for a split seconds before saying.

“Fleet Marines are a Force-in-readiness Lieutenant. At any given time, the President of the United Federation of Planets can deploy the entire Starfleet Marine force to anywhere in the galaxy without the approval of the Federation Council, nor does he have to tell them of this for 30 days unless the situation dictates.”

Leaning back, he took a sip of his coffee and picked up a PADD as he continued to review the personnel files of the marines in the battalion, EVERY single enlisted marine.

Thinking about what the Sergeant Major just said she quickly responded. “So you’re a private army for the President, with no mandate except to follow his direct orders?” Jennings smirked at the comment and took another sip before responding. “Something like that….and we protect Starfleet, don’t forget that.”

Smiling she retorted. “Oh, that whole you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall crap Sergeant Major, what’s that quote from like a 1,000 year old movie?” Jennings starred at her before speaking. “I’ve seen things Lieutenant that would warp your mind for the rest of you’re cushy little life. I’ve seen things that have ended the careers of officers that didn’t have the stomach to take it.” Looking back at his padd in one hand and his coffee in the other, he ended. “Like it our not, you can’t have Starfleet without the Marines Ma‘am.”

“You can’t have the marines, without Starfleet either Sergeant Major.” She replied standing and walking past him to the rear of the shuttle. Jennings just eyed her without moving his head as he went back to his reading, responding under his breath.

“Explorers, hippies of space exploration.”
