Filling An Empty House

875 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: From The Ashes
Location: Azusa's Quarters

The quarters for senior officers on a starbase were large and spacious. It was safe to call it more like a small apartment in space than 'quarters'. Azusa arrived at the doors to her new home. She was a little nervous to see where she would be living for what was hopefully a long time. She paused at the door reading the small room ID tag.

It was real now, this was her new home. She ran a hand over her rounded out belly before unlocking the door. The room was much larger than she had expected. It was an open plan spacious area.

Four large windows looked out into the depths of space, thousands of stars visible in the never-ending scene. It was completely empty and very spartan. No furniture, no decorations, nothing at all. Just a large empty room.

She allowed the grey and silver doors to close behind her and she dropped her duffle bag as she looked around. There were four doors off each of the side walls. In one corner a small kitchen area, complete with replicator and food preparation area stood unused and lifeless. There were a few counters, cupboards and even a sink. It wasn't everyday that a small kitchen area was built into a starship quarters, obviously it was different on a starbase.

Azusa moved over to one of the doors, it led to a small room complete with a built in work desk, computer desk interface. Built into the wall behind the desk was a huge wall console, a MSD of the Starbase was lit up along with current status readings.

"Looks like I get a home office..." Azusa said. She looked down at her belly. "Now, rule one. You're not allowed in here without mummy. This is where I might need to work sometimes." She said as if talking to her unborn son. "Shall we continue to explore?"

The baby kicked her slightly causing her to let out a tiny giggle. "OK, no need to get physical."

The next room, directly adjacent to the home office was a small bedroom. It didn't have a window, but it did have a walk in closet. It was empty of all furniture, so it looked barren. "I guess this will be your room? I can get you a nice crib just there.. " she pointed to one of the corners, "a nice toy box there," she pointed against the far wall "and on this wall we can get a nice clothes chest or something."

Once again the baby kicked her again. "I know its empty right now. But don't worry, we'll decorate it nicely for you." She was answered by more kicks. "Hey, stop that would you... Is there any need to kick my belly button that hard?!"

She shook her head and made her way across the large lounge/kichen/dining area and to the other set of doors. One of them led to a bathroom, complete with bathtub, sonic shower and the usual facilities one would need.

Finally, the last door led to a larger room which Azusa presumed was the master bedroom. It was considerably larger than the other bedroom, and had a window looking out into space. It also had an additional door that led to a small en-suite and sonic shower room. The closet was much larger, plenty of space for two people's worth of clothing.

"I believe this would be the master bedroom." Azusa smiled. "So this is my room." She ran a hand over her belly once again. "Maybe we'll swap rooms when you're older. But we'll see, we don't know of daddy will come back do we? I hope he does, but it's very unlikely..."

She could feel the tears coming to her eyes. "You know, he should be here with us. He should be making this new start with us... But it's not his fault." She said sadly. She could see on her kind where the bed would go. The bed she could have slept in his arms after a long day, where she could be intimate with him in private. She looked away, the opposite wall was perfect for a dressing table. She could be sitting at it, he would be behind her, brushing her hair, tying it up with hair ties and whispering how much he loved her into her ear.

She shut her eyes and turned away. "Nope, this is our new adventure. Just me and you kiddo." Azusa said. Her son kicked her again, this time a little harder. It was like he was reminding her that they were both in this together.

She stepped into the main room and made her way over to one of the windows. "I wonder how he's doing..." she muttered as she looked out at the stars. She shook it off and turned to look back at the room. She leant on her hands against the windowsill. "You know, it might take a while, but I think I can turn this grey blank apartment into a home..." she felt a reassuring kick from within again.

"I'm going to need some furniture..."
