March Awards and Sundries

Heyya, Crew!
Well, on a Fleet level, March was a little sparse for awards -- we only received Area 51's Silver Award!
Of course, some of our excellent crew were on Hermes last month, such as the TF 23 Player of the Month and Player of the Quarter, Captain Ranulf MacBain! Congratulations!
Closer to home, Chris, our Dr. Anjohl Gaden, has been with us for six months now -- way to hang in there! Chris also receives the Friendship Ribbon, which he shares with Christine, for the work they put into character development in the wedding posts.
Lily, our skittish Science Officer Jasmine Collins, receives the Captain's Honor Award for all of her hard work, but especially the wedding posts, which produced a huge surge in activity during March. Jasmine also receives promotion from Lieutenant to Lieutenant Commander for being a consistent instigator of plot and posts.
Speaking of promotions, our executive officer Mikaela Locke receives the long overdue step from Lieutenant Commander to Commander.
In other news...
I wanted to discuss a bit about our home, Starbase 109. We're a Stardock class starbase, the largest spacebourne structures ever built by the United Federation of Planets. At our widest point, we're almost nine kilometers across the beam (5.5 miles) and we're over thirteen kilometers (8 miles) from top to bottom. We're a city in space, with a population in the same general neighborhood as New Haven, Connecticut; Savannah, Georgia; Syracuse, New York; or Eugene, Oregon. At the risk of sounding like a Texan, "Everything is bigger, here."
Our previous CO established the game and the nickname "Vanguard." I thought we might discuss that a little bit. To my mind, it's not really applicable -- the vanguard is the front of an army, which to me, says Starships. I wonder if we should change to "Watchtower" or "Sentinel," as we're located on the Federation's border. A particularly volatile bit of the border, in fact: the Triangle Region, where the borders of the UFP meet those of Romulan and Klingon space. For that matter, do we even need a nickname? Let me know your thoughts on this idea.
And finally...
I wanted to encourage everyone -- always, but especially this month as we have new players joining us from Hermes -- to not wait for someone else to start a JP. Look at the manifest, pick someone you don't write with all the time, and send them an invitation! We're all here for interaction and a chance to play our characters, so help someone find those things!
Thank you all for your hard work in March and always.

We probably DON'T need a nickname, but I'm kind of used to thinking in terms of names instead of numbers. I can go either way on that, though.
I agree on the meaning of Vanguard, though, and like either of those you suggested. A watchtower is where the knights stand to look a long distance and perceive threats. A sentinel is the knight who stands guard. Either works, I like the sound of sentinel better, but watchtower fits better. I don't know if we can put up a poll but I'll check that out.

I agree that Watchtower is more fitting, but I like Sentinel better for two reasons--First, it doesn't remind me of the Jehovah's Witnesses newsletter :)
And second, for reasons of diplomacy, it sounds slightly less threatening to others than Watchtower does. Not that the Klingons or Romulans would actually care; they probably would name their own such stations 'Watchtower' or 'Fortress' in a heartbeat. But I can imagine, for Federation sensibilities, they'd probably go for the more neutral-sounding name.
