743 words; about a 4 minute read
Mission:

Location: Chief Counselor's office, Deck 83
Previously
The high priority letter from the Trill Military Directorate arrived in Paul's in-box with a ping! alerting him to its arrival. He closed the file he was reading concerning an ensign down in the Lower Decks area of the base and opened the official-looking message., surprised that it came from outside 109.
FROM:
Rikata Mol
Doctor / Counselor
Trill Military, Sciences Division
TO:
Chief Counselor, Starbase 109 Commander Paul Graves PsyD
SUBJECT: Heriah Khatain Rex
Greetings from Trill. I am Doctor Rikata Mol, Joined Trill and both Doctor and Counselor for the Sciences Division of the Trill Military. I was recently assigned to Earth to study and become more familiar with humans and Earth. Quite a remarkable planet. My primary purpose for being on Earth was to look after our interests in Heriah Khatain Rex. I understand she was recently assigned to your starbase as commander. Commander Graves, I am sure you two will work closely together and work well together.
Paul held back an amused snort. It was never a good thing when someone wrote and said an incoming officer would be just fine!
He quelled his sense of humor and continued reading through the letter.
Hm. Physical and psychological trauma to the symbiont from an incomplete Borg assimilation that probably contributed to Refkin Rex's death. Yes, that would make me inordinately violent and surly, as well, Paul thought, especially if I had special ops training on top of that. I'd want to go into a holodeck simulation and kill lots of Borg with my bare hands. Weapons wouldn't be enough.
It was an ugly thing to admit about himself, but true. Back when he'd been dating Mikaela Locke, even if something happened to her now, he knew he wouldn't just sit by and wring his hands; he'd want to take down whoever was harming her. Even Betazoid counselors received combat training.
Paul wondered what Rex thought of Heriah, as she was so very different from his other hosts. Did he feel an instinct to protect her? Had he felt the same way about Davmorda and Luftine? It was too bad he couldn't ask Rex, as the pair were now joined and were one personality, but it would be interesting to find out. An understandable but frantic need to protect his host could be causing a lot of what was bothering Rex. Such as, 'They're not going to get _this_ one,' Paul thought.
"Computer, send the current research on joined Trill psychological disorders to my inbox, please. Search back for the last two years. Include case studies as well as peer-reviewed research."
He forwarded the medical information from Dr. Mol had sent him to the ACMO. Lanis, you might want a look at thids. he wrote and then clicked 'send.'
Then he replied to the message Rikata Mol had sent.

Dear Dr. Mol,
Thank you for consulting with me in the care of Commander Heriah Rex. I look forward to working with her and will be honored to participate in her care. I appreciate the information you sent me.
As I see it, the current psychological care plan (until I become acquainted with Commander Rex and amend it) is to aid Heriah in maintaining psychological integrity and self-control while also treating those aspects of Rex that can be accessed through his host. I have some ideas, but I'll need to get to know Heriah and Rex before I can make any decisions.
I'll talk to Commander Rex about scheduling regular monthly counseling sessions. From your letter, it looks like you are sending her here in good shape, and I anticipate that we will enjoy working with her. Thank you for taking the time to write me. I have forwarded the more medical bits of information in your letter to our acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Dhuro, who I'm sure will be glad to have it.
Thank you very much for consulting with me, and I look forward to consulting with you in the future for Commander Rex or other joined Trill patients.
Warmest Regards,
Commander Paul E. Graves, PsyD
Chief Counselor, Starbase 109

Paul pressed 'send' and glanced at the time indicator on his computer screen. Five minutes before his next appointment and then an evening reading about joined Trills. A Counselor's work was never done.
